Water Flow Aerator
Water used in your home is metered and your bill is based on the quantity
of water used. The quantity of warm or hot water used in your home
creates other costs—the cost to heat the water and the consumption
of fossil fuel used to heat it.
A water faucet flow aerator attached to a kitchen sink reduces
total flow while using aeration to maintain the “feel”
of a heavier flow of water. The aerator also allows whoever is doing
the dishes to “flip” off the water flow while a water
stream is not needed for rinsing. The flipping action can be done
with the wrist so it is much easier than turning a knob.
This item is most useful in older homes, as newer kitchens often
have faucets that can be adjusted without a free hand. The water
flow aerator can be used elsewhere in your home to contribute toward
your energy shifting efforts.
Energy use can be traced back to many things that we do each day.
For example, cold water must be treated first so that when it gets
to your home it is clean and safe to use, and getting it to your
home usually involves pumping stations, all of these operations
require energy. So, reducing the total amount of water used in your
home (not just hot water) is a good energy shifting step.
